Slaves of Technology...

A couple of days ago, I was flipping through the channels on TV and came across and old episode of the show Criminal Minds. What grabbed my attention about this particular show was that the bad guy had become really obsessed of what he had read in a book and believed it to be true. The book touched on how we as humans are coming so dependent on technology and that soon we won’t be the masters of computers; instead we would become the slaves of them. In society today we see how this idea presented in this book may exist and may be true today. We see this through the action we take and the belief we have of having to have these technological tools to get by and function well. For example, phones. Phones are equipment that many individual seem go crazy about either when they have forgotten them or even loose them. Do you agree???… Although this show is fiction it is interesting to see how it touches on something that is becoming so big in which we as individuals are becoming so dependent on technology. Thinking about this episode and analyzing it to what extent the issues that exist in our world today, I realized how we are individual are in fact becoming very dependent on the technological equipment that surround us. Laura Hess states in the article “Slaves to Technology” how we are becoming more and more dependent on technology. She also states how thing have become more easier to us, such as, being able to talk to people that are on the other side of the world. Similar in the article “Are we becoming slaves of technology” written by Bilawal Soomro he states how technology is something good that exist yet it has both good and bad implications.

Being able to look at how technology has impacted our lives from a different perspective it’s interesting to see how we become so comfortable with technology and the affect it has had on us, (Slaves of Technology by Laura Hess). Although the affect it has on us may be good and/or bad its something that cannot be so easily removed. Before closing this post I want to ask you what do you think could be done to change this image of us as slaves.

This topic -- whether or not technology has taken over us -- is so controversial. Yes I agree that we're letting, key work LETTING, technology take over us. It's so sad that people no longer physically speak to each other anymore, let alone get some actual face time. And I totally miss having pen-pals and getting excited to get a letter in the mail Because of technology, i feel relationships are so impersonal now.

However, on the hand, i am thankful for technology in ways that it can bring people together, as much as it can tear people apart. I am so glad that because of technology, I am able to get reconnected with long lost childhood friends, be able to talk to relatives outside the country, and even get to see their faces through my computer screen.

technology can be simply explained like this: it's like men. you can't live with them, but you can't live without them :)

I chuckle a little when I hear that someone can't live more than a few minutes without technology. I also die a little on the inside to how they react when they're utterly separated from it. It's a pretty easy weakness to exploit if someone is totally dependent on technology - run their battery dry or put a little foil on their pockets and they're out of commission.

I agree with Lisa, it's nice to be able to reconnect and take advantage of everything technology has to offer, but we have to realize that for all the things they can do, we're humans. We're their master. We can do everything.

Also, technology makes people more anti-social. There's times where I want to talk to someone but I can't compete (nor do I want to) for their attention with their phones - people say get out of the house, but nowadays it's get out and shut in.

Really makes me wanna slap a phone out of someone's hands when I think about it.

I agree with Lisa in that technology can bring us together but I also agree with C.L. in that it holds us apart as well. We are able to see how each other are doing via facebook, but do we actually ever connect with most of those people? I think technology can help connect us with Skype and Facetime, they put you face to face with your caller and you are then able to see each others expressions. So when used wisely technology can bring us together.

Yet, how do we not become slaves? Well for one, put down the phone, turn off the computer and just take a breath. It just comes down to the point that you have to put your electronic device down. This topic brings me to my thoughts on taking pictures of sunsets. If you have ever tried you will know that they never come out the same as the beautiful color and soft mood that you experience when standing in front of one. So I say put down the camera and enjoy the sunset, stop fidgiting with the camera!
